Taking its name from
the river that runs through the department the Gers
is situated in the heart of Gascony. Richly steeped
in history and tradition the region is one of the most
unspoilt and lightly populated areas of France with
the purest air quality in Europe. It is delightfully
free from traffic and mass tourism.
Far away from the stress
and strain of modern life the Gers is a wonderful place
to relax, unwind and enjoy a slower pace. The Gersoise
people statistically have the longest lifespan in the
whole of Europe!
You will find yourself
surrounded by beautiful undulating landscapes, vibrant
fields of sunflowers, gently sloping vines and quaint
historical hilltop villages.
The climate enjoys long
hot summers and short winters. And with the lure of
the Pyrénées only an hour drive away you
are sure to be able to pursue your favourite winter
sport, or even walk in the summer in the National parks.
The Gers has the most
amazing light, whether its a hot sunny afternoon
or a crisp autumnal morning, there is a beautiful warm
glow that bathes the land.
The architecture and culture of the Gers is as rich
and interesting as its history. There is the beautiful
chateau of Lavardens, the historic abbey of Flaran,
the fortified village of Larresingle, the circular bastide
town of Fources, and so many other interesting sights
all within a short distance to explore.
Taste life in the Gers
through the traditional local markets peppered throughout
the region, or through the fabulous gastronomic delights
on offer in local restaurants, hotels and chateaux -
life here is most definitely good!
If
you are looking for an easier pace of life, surrounded
by stunning countryside and a great climate then the
Gers is definitely the place for you.
